Perera, Ajith Mannapperuma, Nalin Bandara and R. Yogarajan, and journalists were attacked by a group of local residents and port workers with stones and eggs while they were conducting an observation mission at the Mattala Airport and Hambantota Port premises.
The media captured a video of Eraj Fernando pointing a gun at the MPs and chasing them. He later claimed that it was a toy pistol and that he had come to the scene to save the MPs from the attack, but the incident caused a huge stir. The Hambantota High Court, in its judgment in the case filed in connection with that incident, sentenced him to five years of rigorous imprisonment and fines in August 2019, and he was later released on bail after an appeal was filed.
