Venerable Galagodaaththe Gnanasara Thero, the General Secretary of the Bodu Bala Sena, has clarified his position on Muslim head coverings. He draws a clear distinction between the hijab, which he supports, and full-face coverings.
The Thero stated that it is "wrong" for Sinhalese people to oppose the hijab, as it still allows for the woman's identification. However, he expressed strong opposition to the niqab and burqa, stating that garments completely concealing the face should be discouraged. He specifically mentioned that women wearing the hijab should be permitted to access services.
